What Is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, located on each side of the face just in front of the ears. It’s one of the most complex joints in the body—used constantly for speaking, chewing, swallowing, and yawning.
TMJ dysfunction (sometimes called TMD) can involve:
Jaw pain or tightness
Clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
Headaches or migraines
Ear pain or ringing
Neck and shoulder tension
Difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully
Bruxism (teeth grinding), especially at night
Common Causes of TMJ Issues
TMJ dysfunction can arise from a variety of factors, including:
Stress and tension, often leading to clenching or grinding
Poor posture or structural imbalances
Injury or trauma to the jaw
Dental work or misalignment of the bite
Inflammation or arthritis in the joint
Even emotional stress can play a role, as the jaw is closely linked with the nervous system and often holds unconscious tension.
Acupuncture for TMJ Relief
Acupuncture is one of the most effective natural treatments for TMJ dysfunction. By inserting ultra-fine needles at strategic points on the face, neck, and body, acupuncture helps:
Relax tight jaw and neck muscles
Reduce inflammation in the temporomandibular joint

In Chinese medicine terms, TMJ issues are often rooted in Liver Qi stagnation, muscle tension, and disruptions in the Stomach and Gallbladder meridians, which run through the jaw and sides of the head.
Cupping and Gua Sha for TMJ
Cupping therapy—particularly on the upper back, shoulders, and neck—can help release the muscular tension that contributes to jaw tightness. By promoting circulation and drawing out stagnation, cupping helps the body let go of chronic holding patterns.
Facial gua sha, a traditional scraping technique using a smooth-edged tool, is especially helpful for releasing tension in the jaw, temples, and cheeks. It encourages lymphatic flow, reduces puffiness, and softens tight fascia in the face.
I may use facial gua sha in treatment—or teach patients how to safely practice it at home between sessions for ongoing relief.
Reiki for TMJ and Stress Relief
TMJ pain isn’t just physical—it’s often fueled by stress and emotional tension. Reiki offers a gentle, hands-on way to calm the nervous system and encourage deep relaxation.
By helping the body shift out of fight-or-flight mode, Reiki can:
