If you’ve ever come into my clinic nursing a sore shoulder, aching lower back, or stubborn bruise, there’s a good chance I reached for a little glass bottle with a mischievous name—Evil Bone Water. And yes, the name always gets a chuckle, but what’s inside is no joke. This powerful topical herbal remedy is a go-to in my practice, and it’s one of those “magic in a bottle” tools I genuinely believe belongs in every home medicine cabinet.

So, what is Evil Bone Water?
Despite its dramatic name, Evil Bone Water is actually a very old, very traditional Chinese herbal liniment. Known originally as Zheng Gu Shui, which means “bone-setting water,” this formula was developed centuries ago to support healing in martial arts injuries. It’s been used to help bones knit, tendons recover, and bruises fade—all without synthetic ingredients or harsh chemicals.
The version I use is handcrafted by an herbalist in small batches using only ethically sourced, high-quality herbs—and without any animal products, parabens, or dyes. It smells amazing, works quickly, and is safe for most people (though I always recommend avoiding open wounds and mucous membranes).
What does it help with?
Here are just a few of the ways I use and recommend Evil Bone Water:
✔️ Pain relief – Whether it’s acute (like a sprained ankle) or chronic (like arthritis), this liniment helps reduce pain and inflammation.
✔️ Bruises – Speeds up the healing process and reduces discoloration.
✔️ Sprains, strains, and sore muscles – Fantastic for recovery after overexertion, injury, or intense workouts.
✔️ Joint pain – Helps soothe stiffness and discomfort from conditions like osteoarthritis or tendonitis.
✔️ Neck and back tension – A favorite when used alongside cupping, acupuncture, or massage.
✔️ Carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and repetitive strain – Especially helpful for those doing a lot of computer work, standing, or repetitive motions.
✔️ Headaches and migraines – Dab a bit behind the ears or along the hairline at the first sign of a headache. Many people find it helps reduce tension and nip it in the bud.
✔️ Menstrual cramps and tummy aches – Rubbed gently over the abdomen, Evil Bone Water can help ease cramping and digestive discomfort.
How do you use it?
It’s super easy to use: Just apply a small amount to the affected area and gently rub it in. You can repeat this several times a day, as needed. A little goes a long way, and you’ll usually feel the cooling, soothing effects right away.
If you’re coming in for a treatment, I may apply it during or after your session—but I also carry it in the clinic so you can take some home if you fall in love with it (like so many of my patients do!).
A quick note: Evil Bone Water is for external use only, and it’s best to avoid if you’re pregnant or have sensitive skin. As always, check with your practitioner if you’re unsure.
If you’re curious or dealing with something you think this might help, ask me about it at your next visit! I’m always happy to share the magic. 🪄
Stay well, stay curious, and keep those bones happy!
