Insurance & Superbills
One of the first questions I’m often asked is: Do you accept insurance?
At Heart Blossom Healing, I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. However, many PPO plans offer reimbursement for acupuncture when performed by a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.), and I’m happy to issue a superbill for you to submit. I’m here to help you navigate your options so you can make informed decisions about your care.

Insurance & Superbill FAQs
What is a superbill?
A superbill is a detailed receipt you’ll receive after your appointment. It includes:
-
Diagnosis codes
-
Treatment codes
-
Total fees paid
You can submit this to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
How do I know if I have coverage?
To find out if your plan includes out-of-network acupuncture benefits, contact your insurance provider directly. The Member Services number is usually on the back of your card.
Here are helpful questions to ask:
-
Do I have coverage for acupuncture?
-
Is acupuncture covered when performed by a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.)?
-
Is coverage limited to specific conditions (e.g., pain, nausea, headaches)?
-
Do you reimburse for out-of-network providers?
-
If yes, what percentage is reimbursed, and what is my deductible?
-
Do I need a referral, prescription, or prior authorization?
-
Where do I submit my superbill or claim form?
How do I submit a superbill?
Most insurance companies allow you to submit claims in one of the following ways:
-
Through your online member portal
-
Or by mail using a claim form
You’ll attach the superbill I provide after your visit. If eligible, reimbursement is typically sent directly to you.
What can I expect for reimbursement?
Coverage varies widely depending on your specific plan.
Even when acupuncture is covered:
-
You may need to meet a deductible first
-
Reimbursement percentages vary (often 50–80%)
-
Insurance companies determine payment timelines
Because of this, I recommend checking your benefits in advance so you know what to expect.
Why I don’t bill insurance directly
I choose not to bill insurance so I can:
-
Spend more time with each patient
-
Provide personalized, integrative care
-
Use the combination of modalities that best supports your body
This allows your treatment to be guided by your needs—not insurance restrictions.
A note on HMO & Medicaid plans
HMO and Medicaid plans do not offer out-of-network reimbursement for acupuncture.
HSA / FSA & Payment Options
Can I use my HSA or FSA card to pay for acupuncture?
Most HSA and FSA accounts will cover acupuncture, as it’s considered an IRS-approved medical expense. You can typically use your HSA/FSA card to pay for your visit directly.
I recommend checking with your plan provider to confirm your specific coverage.
What about Reiki?
You may be able to use your HSA or FSA funds for Reiki if you have a written prescription or letter of medical necessity from your doctor.
Please check with your plan to ensure you meet their requirements and avoid any potential tax penalties.
And herbs & supplements?
Some HSA/FSA plans may allow you to use funds for herbs and supplements, particularly with a letter of medical necessity.
Coverage varies, so it’s best to verify with your provider.
Not using insurance—or looking for a way to make ongoing care more affordable?
Memberships & Self-Pay Options
Do you offer membership options for ongoing care?
Yes—I offer membership options for patients who plan to come in regularly. Memberships provide discounted rates and can make ongoing care more accessible.

Can I use a membership if I’m submitting to insurance?
Yes, you can absolutely use a membership even if you plan to submit superbills to insurance. This can be especially helpful while meeting your deductible.
However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
-
The membership fee itself is not reimbursable by insurance
-
Your superbill will reflect the discounted rate you paid for your visit
-
Reimbursement (if eligible) will be based on that discounted amount
