Series: Tending to the Five Elements
In Chinese medicine, the Earth element is the center of the Five Elements. It represents stability, nourishment, and the ability to digest and transform—not just food, but thoughts, emotions, and life experiences.
Earth governs the Spleen and Stomach systems and corresponds with late summer, a season of ripening and harvest. It asks us to slow down, tend to ourselves, and cultivate groundedness from within.

How Do You Know When Earth Needs Support?
You may be Earth-dominant or experiencing an Earth imbalance if you:
Feel tired, foggy, or heavy after eating
Crave sweets or comfort food when stressed
Tend to worry or overthink
Put others’ needs ahead of your own
Experience sluggish digestion, water retention, or weight gain
Feel ungrounded—especially in times of transition or uncertainty
What Foods Nourish the Earth Element?
To support your Earth element, favor warm, cooked, naturally sweet foods in yellow, orange, or golden hues. These foods are easier to digest and energetically tonify the Spleen and Stomach.
Best Earth-nourishing foods include:
Root vegetables (sweet potatoes, carrots, parsnips)
Squashes (butternut, kabocha, pumpkin)
Whole grains (millet, rice, oats)
Legumes (lentils, chickpeas)
Warm teas (ginger, cinnamon, fennel)
Yellow fruits (apples, pears, apricots)
Natural sweeteners (dates, honey, molasses—in moderation)
Avoid excess cold/raw foods (smoothies, salads, iced drinks), especially in the morning or during cooler months, as they can impair digestive fire.
A Gentle Reminder for Earth Types
If you're someone who gives generously—always showing up for others—it’s vital to remember: nurturing yourself isn’t selfish, it’s essential. Your ability to care for others depends on the strength of your own center. Supporting your Earth element helps you stay grounded, nourished, and resilient.
Visualization for Earth Element Healing
Take a few quiet breaths. Place your hands gently over your lower abdomen.
Option 1: Golden Light in the Belly Visualize a warm, golden ball of light in your abdomen. With each breath, feel this light growing stronger and steadier. Let it fill your whole center with calm, radiant energy—like the sun warming the earth beneath your feet.
Option 2: Wheat Field on a Late Summer Day Picture yourself walking through a golden field of ripened wheat under a soft, late summer sun. The air is still. The earth is warm. You feel steady, grounded, and deeply nourished.
Option 3: Your Inner Kitchen Imagine your body as a cozy kitchen hearth. A pot of nourishing stew simmers gently on the stove. Everything is warm, quiet, and lovingly tended. This is the center you return to when the world feels overwhelming.

2 carrots, chopped
1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed
1 cup butternut or kabocha squash, cubed
1 tsp grated fresh ginger

4 cups vegetable or bone broth
Sea salt and pepper to taste
Optional: Cooked lentils or millet for extra grounding, shredded chicken for protein, a sprinkle of raisins for natural sweetness, and fresh cilantro as a garnish

Baked sweet potato rounds with a sprinkle of cinnamon
Steamed apples or pears with a dash of nutmeg
Rice porridge (congee) with dates or pumpkin
Lightly toasted pumpkin seeds with tamari
Final Thought: Come Home to Yourself
The Earth element reminds us to center ourselves before extending outward. With every meal, every mindful breath, every act of self-kindness, you reinforce your inner stability. And from that place, you can give and care for others without losing yourself.
If you’re finding it hard to prioritize your own care, you’re not alone. Sometimes, scheduling an acupuncture or Reiki session is more than a healing treatment—it’s a way to commit to yourself in a tangible, lasting way.
Or reach out if you’re not sure where to begin. I’d be honored to support you.
